Volleyball WA Awards
Annual Awards Dinner
At the recent VWA Annual Awards dinner
Southern Cross was again well represented among the award
winners:
With premierships in 4
of the 11 grades contested along with polling well in the other
categories such as junior players and officials at AJVC Southern
Cross was a comfortable winner of the Champion Club award. This
is the third time in the last four years Southern Cross has won
this highly coveted title.
Women's
Superleague coach Pauline Manser was awarded the coach of the
year award for coaching the WA team to the AVL title.
Superleague mens coach
Jonathon Hague was awarded the 2008/2009 beach player of the
year for his performances in last summer’s State Series.
Master’s setter Dave
Hedge was again successful in achieving personal honours being
awarded the Division 1 Most Valuable Player award, for the 5th
time in seven years.
Our final award on the
men’s side of the PVL competition was to Tom Murray as MVP in
the Division 4.
Our only female MVP
winner was Cassy King taking out the Division 2 MVP award.
One final award
presented at the dinner was to Jodie Papiccio as referee of the
year. Jodie also won the award as best referee at the AJVC
tournament held in
Brisbane mid-year.

PVL FINALS 2009
Perth Volleyball League Finals
After only winning one premiership in 2008
Southern Cross came back strongly to produce many fine
performances in 2009. On grand finals day we had eight teams
contesting their respective grades.
In the Superleague men
our guys had revenge on Rossmoyne for their defeat in the
semi-final. In a hard fought match with many highlights we won
3-2.
In the Division 1 men
our guys showed they had come out of the form slump which had
plagued them during the latter part of the season to defeat
Rossmoyne with a commanding 3-0 score line.
Our Division 2 men were
unable to re-produce the form that got them through the Friday
night preliminary final going down 3-0 to Balcatta.
Our young guns in the
Division 4 men were against the minor premiers Perth Coastal.
Whilst our guys generally played well we were unable to finish
off sets consistently, going down 3-1.
On the women’s side of
the draw the only truly club team competing won the Division 2
womens premiership, defeating Balcatta 3-1.
Two other grades in
which we were represented were the Division 4 women, in which
one of the teams from Penrhos went down to Balcatta 3-1, and the
Under 17 women, which saw the two Penrhos teams playing each
other for the honour, with the A team coming out on top 3-1.

PVL Club Trials
Club Selection for PVL Teams
Unlike previous years we will be splitting the
mens and womens more into grades. Div 2 and 3 selections for both
men and women will be 7:00-8:30 with Superleague and Div 1
8:30-10:00. If you wish to be considered for SL/Div 1 you must attend
the later times. New players (unless they have a history in PVL)
should attend the 7:00 session on the 18th.
In order for a smooth running of these trials I
would appreciate some assistance, especially if you are interested
in coaching this year. As with every year we need coaches for all
teams. If you are interested in coaching this year please contact me
ASAP.
